Tarot Truth : The Cards I Hate Pulling in Couples Readings

Whether it’s one person asking about their relationship or a couple sitting together in front of me, there are a few tarot cards that instantly make my stomach drop. These cards are powerful, honest, and… brutal. When they show up, I know we’re about to have a very real conversation.

Here are the cards I hate pulling in couples readings (and why):

The Tower
= sudden, dramatic upheaval, painful change, destruction, and fundamental reevaluation of core values. When I pull this card for a couples reading, it usually indicates a very painful, unexpected, and messy breakup.

3 of Swords
= heartache, painful period, betrayal, loss, and a need for healing. Pulling this card in a couples reading, or really any reading, is rough. It often indicates an upcoming moment of heartbreak, emotional suffering, and the need for lots and lots of healing.

Reversed Knight of Swords
= this is the cheater card, emotionally unavailable, impulsive, uncommitted, and deceitful.
When I pull this card in a couples reading, I can guarantee that the masculine partner is cheating or has cheated in the relationship… the cards don’t lie.

5 of Cup
= sadness, loss, and regret.
This card is all about sadness and loss. It’s a hard card to pull in any reading, but especially in a reading that revolves around relationships. It often indicates a person exiting your life and a great depth of depression and sorrow.

7 of Swords
= also a cheater card: dishonesty, betrayal, being sneaky, hidden agenda, and an attempt to get away with something.

Unlike the Knight, this card doesn’t necessarily indicate a gender, but it does indicate that someone is hiding something. Someone in the relationship is purposefully, intentionally going out of their way to keep secrets buried deep. Often this is cheating, but it can also be things like money issues, addiction, or other major relationship stressors.
